What are UGC ads? A guide for B2B, SaaS, and tech brands

UGC ads are paid ads that look and sound like content a real person made, because a real person usually did. Instead of a studio-shot product video, you run a creator talking to camera on their phone, or sharing their screen, or reacting to what your product just did.

They work for a simple reason. People scroll past anything that looks like an ad, and stop for anything that looks like a person. This guide covers the main types of UGC ads, why they perform, what they cost, and how B2B and tech brands make them.

What counts as a UGC ad?

UGC stands for user-generated content. In advertising, the "user" is rarely a spontaneous customer any more. Most UGC ads are made by paid creators who specialise in native-looking short-form video.

A UGC ad has 3 traits:

  1. It's filmed like organic content. Vertical, handheld, natural light, a real voice.
  2. A person is the messenger. A creator, customer, or employee, not a brand voiceover.
  3. It's paid media. The video runs with ad budget behind it, targeted at an audience you choose.

The 4 main types of UGC ads

1. Brand-run UGC-style ads

A creator films a video, hands you the file, and you run it from your brand's ad account. This is the classic model, and what most UGC marketplaces sell. You need paid usage rights in the contract.

2. Creator-handle ads

The ad runs through the creator's account, so it shows their name and profile rather than yours. On TikTok these are Spark Ads. On Instagram and Facebook they are partnership ads. On LinkedIn, Thought Leader Ads do the same job with posts from individual members. We compare all 3 in Spark Ads vs Partnership Ads vs Thought Leader Ads.

3. Boosted Canvas UGC

With Canvas UGC, creators post daily to accounts your brand owns. The videos that win organically get boosted as ads. You aren't guessing which video to put money behind. The organic data already told you.

4. AI-generated UGC ads

Tools like Krea and Vibiz now generate UGC-style videos with AI presenters. They're cheap and fast for testing hooks, with real trade-offs on trust and disclosure. We cover when to use them in AI UGC vs Human Creators.

Why UGC ads work

  • They don't look like ads. On TikTok, Reels, and Shorts, a polished ad breaks the flow of the feed. A person talking doesn't.
  • They show the product working. For software, a 20-second screen recording beats any claim you could write.
  • They're cheap to test. One studio ad costs more than 20 creator videos. More versions mean more chances to find the message that lands.
  • They carry trust. Buyers believe someone who looks like them. The 2024 Edelman-LinkedIn study found nearly 73% of decision-makers trust thought leadership more than marketing materials when assessing a company.

We saw this with Finden, an AI workspace we relaunched. Creator-led video beat polished static creative across every placement. The best ad reached a 17.20% click-through rate at £0.57 per landing page view.

What do UGC ads cost?

Costs split into 2 parts: making the videos and running them.

ModelTypical cost structureBest for
One-off creator videoPer video, plus usage rightsTesting a few hooks
Marketplace orderPlatform fee plus creator feesSmall batches of ad creative
Managed Canvas UGCManagement fee plus creator base fees and a views feeOngoing volume and organic reach
AI UGC toolMonthly subscriptionFast, low-cost hook testing

Ad spend sits on top of every model. At Regen, Canvas UGC starts at $2,500 a month in management, with creators paid $500 each plus $1.30 per 1,000 views. The full breakdown is in Canvas UGC Pricing.

How to make UGC ads that convert

  1. Brief the problem, not a script. Give creators the pain point, the product, and the proof. Let them say it in their own words.
  2. Get to the product fast. The best tech UGC ads show the screen within 5 seconds. See our UGC hooks for tech brands.
  3. Make lots of versions. Test hooks, not just audiences. 10 openings on the same video will tell you more than 10 targeting tweaks.
  4. Scale proven organic winners. A video that already earned views and comments organically is your safest paid bet.
  5. Measure what matters. Judge on cost per trial, demo, or qualified lead, not views. Our guide to measuring UGC covers the metrics.

UGC ads for B2B: what's different

B2B UGC ads follow the same rules, with 3 adjustments:

  • Creators need to understand the job. A generic lifestyle creator can't explain a finance workflow credibly. Pick creators who have done the role, or can speak to it.
  • The funnel is longer. Use UGC ads to drive trials, demo views, and retargeting audiences, then let paid social and sales take it from there.
  • LinkedIn matters. For decision-maker audiences, Thought Leader Ads on posts from creators and employees give UGC a B2B home.

UGC ads FAQ

What is the difference between UGC ads and influencer ads?

Influencer ads borrow a creator's audience and endorsement. UGC ads borrow their style. A UGC creator doesn't need followers, because your ad budget provides the reach.

Are UGC ads better than traditional video ads?

On short-form platforms, they usually win on click-through rate and cost per result because they fit the feed. Polished video still has a place in brand campaigns, on YouTube, and in sales decks.

Do I need usage rights for UGC ads?

Yes. Agree paid usage rights, duration, and platforms in writing before the creator films. Without them, you can post the video organically but you shouldn't run it as an ad.

How many UGC ads should I test?

Start with at least 10 videos across 3 or 4 angles. You need enough variety to learn which message works before you scale spend.
